The biggest thing I miss about Android is Torque Pro. Is there anything remotely comparable on iOS, or should I just buy a cheap Android tablet?

I use iOBD2, works decently. Not as good as Torque Pro probably though I think

OBD Fusion gets good reviews. I bought it but don’t know where I stashed my adapter so I can’t offer any real feedback.

DashCmd works great and I think it’s free; at least it was when I got it.

If it doesn’t work out on iPhone you could always pick up a cheap android phone for <$50. Just leave it in the car.

I have the magic touch of death with Android phones. I'd probably just kill it.

I use DashCommand. With iOS you don’t use a Bluetooth dongle but one that uses WiFi. I found a cheap one with a long cable that I rerouted to the center console, all hidden behind the dash.

It came in really handy one day when the stealership tried to get me to pay $75-$125 for an alleged CEL issue. I showed them their own notes as well as connecting to the car from 100 ft away to show them that there wasn’t a problem. Lots of stammering and back peddling on their part followed...

Shit, torque doesnt work on Ios? That is some garbage. Stupid apple and their crap. At least I now have a legitimate reason for my disdain of IOS rather than just “reasons”.

Yeah but at least you are only out like $30 if you go bargain basement barely functional android device.

I use DashCommand, but it’s not great for newer vehicles. Carista works ok, especially if you have a VW or BMW.

Aye. I much prefer Android OS, but I can’t make an Android phone live for longer than 4 months. They all fail spectacularly in my care. Iphones? I keep them for years. Reliability is more important.

Define “newer”... My newest vehicle is 17 years old.

But if you can buy 20-30 of the phones for the price of 1 i phone, that gets you through quite a few years more than that one i phone will. That has been my philosophy, similar to harbor freight tools. I dont NEED a phone, its just a nice to have thing. And I can go to any walmart to get another if really need one that day.

I broke my android while driving across the country and had to stop in at a walmart to buy another and it didnt even delay me.

It wasn’t too bad, maybe $20-25. They’ve probably dropped in price over the last 4-5 years since I bought mine. And I might have purchased a more deluxe model; it’s worth checking Amazon and FleaBay to be sure.

I did try using my old Motorola for Torque and navigation but it was an exercise in frustration. Then I tried a cheap Android tablet but that wasn't much better.  Now I use an iPad mini 2 for these functions and I'm much happier.

I bought OBD Fusion. I’m reasonably happy with it: the digital dashboard functionality is highly customizable, though a bit finnicky (the save & load styles feature helps a lot), and it reads codes fine. However I haven’t ever used other OBD software so I don’t have a great basis for comparison.

My main complaints are that it can only graph four PIDs at a time and that the way it splits the PIDs up can make it hard to find the one you’re looking for.

I found a Bluetooth LE OBD reader thingy that I use because I am too paranoid to drive around with an open wi-fi network attached to my vehicle’s CAN bus (I work in computer security). Unfortunately when I looked for another Bluetooth one this spring, it was discontinued and I couldn’t find another. I do have a spare wi-fi one I’d give you for free, if you need the hardware and are less paranoid than me.

Happy to answer any specific questions you might have about it.

I use the same beater Volvo philosophy that we have when it comes to iPhones . My $400 refurbished 6S was in pretty much new condition when I got it, and I plan on running it into the ground. IMO it’s the best phone Apple’s ever done since the size is just right and it still has a home button and audio jack. Perhaps a battery replacement is in the cards a year and a half in, but it’s never quit on me and does exactly what I need it to do always (text, social media, decent camera, watching Petrolicious while washing dishes). I have a PC since I do enjoy the transparency of the platform (and I need a computer that can actually do things) , but since I couldn’t give two shits about mobile computing I’ve just figured the  iPhone is the default for a reason.

Replace your battery for only $29 now because after this year it will be going up to $69.

Nice, this is the way to do it! Gotta ride that depreciation curve. I would love like an iphone 4s that runs android software on it. I think that is the perfect size phone and has more than adequate hardware for me. If I could somehow have that with a microsd it would be the ideal phone device.

False.  I currently have a $150 iPhone SE. Previously I’ve owned a secondhand iPhone 4 and 5. They just seem to last and last for me.

Ahh okay you arent in the iphone8 and up yet where it becomes crazy stupid money. I very much agree that OG iphones are where its at for cost to longevity standpoint. My only hard stop requirement though is microsd support. I can’t use a phone without that and could basically care less after that. That and .ogg filetype support really. My 128gb microsd has about 90gb of music that has been crammed down to 256 ogg from my 600gb of lossless.

It’s still at 85% battery health , will they do the discounted replacement? I’ve heard from some sources that they only do it below 80% although I haven’t done enough research myself to know conclusively. I have a Mophie which definitely makes it less pressing, but definitely nice to have it updated.

Lucky t hey do it regardless of battery level now. I would do it in November if I were you , expect a big rush during December since a lot of people will be waiting until the last couple  weeks.

Oh, yes, for sure then! Can you just bring it to an Apple store and have it done immediately? I don’t really have the opportunity to ship it out and not have a phone for a few days...

What kind of car do you have? BrianGriffin suggested Carista. If you’re not sure about that one, and you drive an Audi/VW, you could go with a cheap Android tablet and get OBDeleven.
